Al principio me limitaba a vivir día a día, como hacemos la mayoría. Coqueteaba con esto y con lo otro, me hacía los propósitos para el Año Nuevo, picoteaba aquí y allá, e iba distrayéndome con los pequeños problemas, los recados cotidianos y los asuntos domésticos, entre los cuales es facilísimo que se escurra una vida entera, como se escurren los minutos cuando nos enfrascamos en la observación del minutero del reloj intentando vanamente percibir su movimiento.

Si de verdad queremos afrontar el problema, deberíamos considerar el diseño de las tecnologías digitales el primer campo de batalla de la lucha por recobrar nuestra libertad y nuestra autodeterminación. El diseño de tecnología digital es la política detrás de la política que configura nuestro universo atencional y orquesta causas y efectos con arreglo a sus propios objetivos. Pero esta nueva forma de poder no responde a los apelativos habituales ni se atiene a las reglas establecidas, y quienes lo ostentan insisten —a pesar de que así incurren en una flagrante disonancia cognitiva— en que no ejercen un poder político considerable. Cuando es evidente que sí lo ejercen.

El efecto global de la economía de la atención —esto es, el de gran parte de nuestras tecnologías digitales, que se limitan a cumplir la función para la que fueron diseñadas— ha sido el de frustrar y minar la voluntad a escala individual y colectiva, socavando los supuestos sobre los que se asienta la democracia. Todas estas tecnologías nos guían y nos dirigen, pero ninguna nos satisface ni nos apoya. He ahí las «distracciones» de un sistema que, decididamente, no está de nuestra parte.

Hoy no solo existe una crisis económica y pandémica, sino también una crisis narrativa. Los relatos crean sentido e identidad. Por eso, la crisis narrativa conduce a un vacío de sentido, a una crisis de identidad y a una falta de orientación. Las teorías de la conspiración como microrrelatos proporcionan aquí un remedio. Se asumen como recursos de identidad y significado.
