He disagreed with many of Mary's points and yet they sparked his own ideas. This kind of legacy has become a thing of the past: digital reading and notes will hardly survive (not to mention their links to the original texts), and even paper books hardly have any space for notes in the margins anymore... Which cannot be thought of anything but a great loss.
