#Introduction Hi #fediverse ! We’re the European Southern Observatory, and we design, build and operate ground-based telescopes.

One of them is our Extremely Large Telescope, currently under construction in #Chile. It will have a 39 m mirror, and its rotating enclosure will weigh 6100 tonnes, or about 700 mastodons!

We’re looking forward to chatting with all of you about #astronomy

The giant metal frame of a dome takes up most of the picture frame, contrasting with the brown hills and a thin horizontal line of blue sky in the background. The dome's frame is not yet fully covered in the middle, so the dark brown landscape behind it shows. Se nota claramente la influencia de "100 años de Soledad" de Gabriel García Márquez en este libro. Eso para mi es algo muy bueno, considerando que el de García Márquez es uno de mis libros favoritos de la vida. En la parte de "realismo" del realismo mágico, siendo latinoamericano y particularmente chileno, uno se siente identificado con una realidad existió y que aún existe. Formas de pensar y de vivir, y los terribles acontecimientos ocurridos durante la dictadura cívico-militar. "La Casa de Los Espíritus" no alcanza a estar al nivel de la gran obra de Marquez, pero creo que está solo un pequeño peldaño por debajo.

The big dish is a decommissioned radio #telescope. In the background there is the 3.6-m telescope with its #exoplanet-hunting instrument #HARPS

The huge orange disc of the Sun dominates the picture against a black background, due to the way the image was taken. The Sun has nearly fully risen above the ground and is just cut off from being a perfect circle at the bottom. Much like shadow puppets on a screen, the dark outline of the criss-crossed steel structure of the ELT dome is positioned at the centre of the Sun. There are large cranes leaning in over the central dome, also only distinguishable as dark outlines.
