Really sad news to hear about Sam Neill passing. 'Jurassic Park' might be the first film that pops up in many people's heads when they hear his name, but from John Carpenter's 'In the Mouth of Madness', to 'Possession', 'The Piano', 'Event Horizon', and 'The Hunt for Red October', he had an incredible range. There was a time that it seemed like Sam Neill was in everything, from the arthouse dramas of the 80s to the blockbusters of the 90s, and he brought his versatility and charm to every role he played. Definitely one of the actors that defined that era of cinema.

The scene ‘Well, I didn’t vote for you’ appears quite early on in *Monty Python and the Holy Grail*, when King Arthur and his knights ride past a muddy field and come across a group of peasants arguing about their form of government. The scene is a fast-paced, deadpan satire on political legitimacy, monarchy and democracy; although set in a medieval world, it is couched in modern political language.
The scene escalates into the absurd when Dennis is physically subdued. Arthur shouts ‘Shut up!’ and Dennis shouts ‘I’m being oppressed!’, and Arthur finally, out of frustration, calls him a ‘damned peasant’. The humour lies in the peasants’ intellectual self-assurance, the king’s inability to defend his authority logically, and the sheer absurdity of medieval people speaking like political theorists.
This scene is famous for having become a meme and a byword for people who reject authority because they did not elect it - although the series actually parodies this logic by showing how absurd it is to apply modern democratic ideas to a medieval monarchy. It is one of the film’s most frequently quoted and analysed scenes and perfectly captures Monty Python’s style of blending historical parody, political satire and pure absurdity.

The Socel Director

Marjane Satrapi was a cartoonist who made a graphic novel-memoir called #Persepolis. It was later animated as a film of the same name, with her co-directing.

It tells the story her life during the revolution in Iran in the 1980s. About her grandmother, her parents, her activism, her country, her government.

Her family has reported that has died. If you would like to honor her life, or see a fantastic story, read her book, or see her movie.

Are there any books that made you a different person? Particularly when you were a kid or young teen? There were for me, and this was one of them. The funny thing is that it was •written• by a teen, too: Harry Medved was 17 years old when he wrote "The Fifty Worst Films of All Time".

Specifically it had a HUGE impact on my sense of humor. It covers fifty films which, if not STILL the worst of all time, are certainly still among the worst of the worst. You probably haven't heard of most of them, although some are so awful that they've earned a sort of perverse immortality and even fans. Of course the book was written long before MST3K, but it has much of the same spirit: a twisted enjoyment of the biggest flops, the stupidest scripts, the dumbest concepts, and the most painful acting.

At least a few of these films were also given the MST3K treatment years later, such as "Santa Claus Conquers The Martians" and (I think) "Robot Monster". You can probably find them on YouTube or the Internet Archive.

Each film gets a thorough (and thoroughly funny) writeup, including stills, plot summaries, "Unforgettable Performances", "Immortal Dialogue", the story behind the film, and more.

This is the book that CREATED bad film fandom. It inspired MST3K, as well as two excellent sequels and a lot of other professional film mockers. Its cultural impact has been enormous.

I've only ever seen the book as a large paperback; I have a copy, of course. But it was never released as an ebook. Luckily it's available to borrow for free online at the Internet Archive, every bad film buff's best friend!
