Le XXI° a à peine vingt-cinq ans que l'exclusion, la misère et la violence atteignent des proportions jamais égalées. Les possédants sont barricadés et armés contre les pillards " crèves la faim " ou des bandes de pyromanes fous furieux drogués jusqu'aux yeux.
Dans ce monde détruit, quelques groupes tentent de s'organiser pour survivre. C'est au sein d'une de ces communautés que vit Lauren, quinze ans, noire, fille du premier mariage d'un pasteur et d'une junkie à qui elle doit une faiblesse qui est son secret : l'hyper empathie. Elle ressent en effet comme sienne la douleur ou le plaisir d'autrui dans un monde où le plaisir s'est terriblement raréfié.
Jetée sur les routes dans un exode de cauchemar suite au massacre de sa famille, la jeune Lauren trace son chemin à travers le chaos, semant une parole d'espoir pour une nouvelle humanité auprès des déshérités. Elle veut fonder une nouvelle communauté avec l'aide de ses compagnons de voyage.
Ce que l'écrivain cybernaute William Gibson fait pour ses indéfectibles jeunes fans blancs. Octavia Butler le fait pour les gens de couleur. Elle nous donne un futur.
Je suis pas un grand amateur de SF post-apo, mais je dois dire que je me suis laissé prendre. Alors que la plupart des classiques du genre sont orientés sur les stratégies de survie et le dilemme de la confiance en l'autre dans un monde qui s'effondre, donnant souvent une tonalité individualiste, Butler renouvelle un peu le genre en rajoutant une dimension plus politique, et la foi dans un possible monde en commun. Même si la description des États unis en proie aux hordes de meurtriers violeurs est éprouvante, cet espoir qui porte le personnage principal donne envie de lire la suite.
