Bij herlezing vind ik het niet goed begrijpelijk dat ik bij eerste lezing geaarzeld heb tussen drie en vier sterren. Het boek is echt heel goed. Door de getrapte manier van vertellen komen de gruwelen goed binnen. Als poging om de slachtoffers recht te doen maakt het grote indruk.
Volgens het nawoord van de auteur gaat het boek over liefde. Ik zou zelf gezegd hebben dat het boek gaat over de verschrikkingen van de slachtpartijen op Jeju. Maar in de loyaliteit en trouw aan de slachtoffers zit natuurlijk ook liefde. Het verhaal van de verschrikkingen wordt heel indirect verteld. Ik vond het vaak wel heel omslachtig. Waarom moeten mensen in elkaars dromen verschijnen? Maar nu ik de gebeurtenissen nog eens in gedachten na ga, maak ik toch van een drie een vier.
