Waldo is hongerig. Bot. Naïef. Wijs. Impulsief. Eenzaam. Boos. Gekwetst. Eindeloos hunkerend. En wat ze het allerliefst wil? Haar docent creatief schrijven, meneer Korgy.

Verrassend scherpzinnig, bijtend …

Valuable and Powerful

5 izar

So hard to find a book that delves into the mind of a teenaged girl without judgement or moralizing. A raw look at the struggles of life that compound with misogyny, poverty, isolation, and the raw human realness inside all of us. I really loved this book. I adore McCurdy's ability to detangle the complicated nature of messy human reality, her ability to give us characters who are illogical and damaged while forcing us to acknowledge their humanity and worth. This is a deeply humanizing novel, one of the rare gems that take a teenage girl and tell her story without the hate or judgement or vitriol about her nature. A book that exposes the struggle of immaturity and the difficulties of growing up in this world without a support system.

A Novel with a Strong Voice that Appeals to a Particular Audience

McCurdy's prose is full of voice, yet I struggled to connect to Waldo. She prattled on about beauty products, clothes, and her attraction to her average, middle-aged teacher; I couldn't make myself care about any of it. I stopped reading around the 18% mark, realizing I'm not the target audience.
